Windows 98 DNS Changes

These instructions will take you through how to configure your computer for proper DNS settings for Primary Network, step by step. You may need to have either your Windows 98 CD-ROM or floppy disks available. In most cases, the manufacturer of your computer should have provided these things.

1. From the Windows desktop, double-click on the My Computer icon. A window should open that looks similar to the picture below.

2. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon. A window should open that look similar to this picture:
3. Use the right mouse button to click on the icon for your Primary dial-up connection, and a menu should appear. From the menu, choose Properties. A dialog box should open that looks similar to the picture below:

4. Click on the Server Types tab. The dialog box should change and the screen should look like this:

Make sure all check-boxes match the screen above, then click on the  "TCP/IP Settings" button. A new dialog box should open that looks like this:

 

5. Verify that "Server assigned IP address" box is selected. Verify that "Server assigned name server addresses" box is also selected.
Both checkboxes, "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" should be checked.

6. Once the settings match the picture above, click OK to exit the TCP/IP Settings dialog box, then click OK once more to exit the Primary connection properties.

At this point, you should be back to the My Computer window:

7. Double-click on Control Panel, and the control panel window should open:

8. Double-click on the Network icon to open the Network Control Panel.
10. Click once on the TCP/IP Protocol -> Dial-Up Adapter to highlight it, then click on the Properties button (as displayed below)

A warning will appear that looks like this:

 
11. Click OK and the Network screen will appear. It should look something like the image below with the following exceptions:
In the Configuration section should be:
Microsoft Family
Client for Microsoft Networks
Dialup Adapter
TCP/IP (or TCP/IP Dial up Adapter)
Remove any other items from this list unless your machine is running on a network.
NOTE: The above applies ONLY to users connected to Primary's dial-up network and to no other TCP/IP network. If you are connected to another network or a LAN, contact your network administrator before making changes to your computer's DNS configuration.

 

 

12. Click on the TCP/IP line until it is highlighted, then click on the Properties button. The Properties dialog box should appear.

13. In the TCP/IP Properties box , click on the DNS Configuration tab. The dialog should then appear like the following:

14. Make sure the Disable DNS button is marked. If DNS is enabled, select Disable DNS.

NOTE: This configuration change applies ONLY to users connected to Primary's dial-up network and to no other TCP/IP network. If you are connected to another network or a LAN, contact your network administrator before making changes to your computer's DNS configuration.

15. Next, click OK to exit the TCP/IP Properties dialog. Click OK once more to exit the Network Control Panel. You may then be prompted to restart your computer. If so, click OK to restart your computer. Once it's restarted, your computer should be configured properly for use with Primary Network.
