Windows
CE HPCs and the Internet
Setting up a PPP Connection
Everything
you need to connect your Windows CE HPC to a PPP internet
connection is included, and just needs to be configured!
Of course, you will need a few things.
Requirements:
- A
Windows CE HPC
- A
PCMCIA modem card that will work with your HPC
- An
ISP account (you'll need their phone number and any
TCP/IP settings)
Setting
up the Connection
Connect
your modem to your HPC, then turn the HPC on. Click
Start, Programs, then double-tap on the Communications
folder. Within this folder, you should see an icon labled
Remote Communications. Double-tap that icon,
and you should something similar to the following:

You
will likely only see the "Make New Connection"
icon if this is the first time you've set up any connections.
Double-tap
on the "Make New Connection" icon, and the
screen below will appear. Enter any name you'd like
to use for this connection, and click the "Dial
Up Connection" button. You should see something
like this (I used "My ISP" as the name for
my connection): (Primary suggests using "Primary
Network" as the Dialer Name)

The
next screen will ask you to select a modem. Hopefully,
Windows CE auto-detected your modem and has it already
listed in the drop-down box. Enter the telephone number
that you dial to connect to your ISP (Click
here to find your Primary Connection Phone Number).
It should look something like this: (The phone number
in the picture below is an example - DO NOT USE IT -
it is not a Primary Number)

Now
click the "Configure" button. You should see
the following:

Make
any changes necessary on this screen. If your ISP doesn't
handle automatic PPP handshaking, for example, you may
need to click the "Use terminal window after dialing"
in order to enter your user ID and password. (Primary
allows automatic PPP handshaking. Use the "Use
terminal window before dialing " only if you have
a problem dialing in automatically) You may also want
to adjust the listed baud rate if it's not correct for
your modem.
Click
the OK button, and you'll be back at the previous
screen. Now click the "TCP/IP Settings" button.
The TCP/IP Settings screen will appear. Adjust the settings
as necessary - for most ISP's, the defaults will work
just fine. In my example, I've unchecked the "Server-assigned
name server addresses" box and entered a specific
DNS server IP address:
Primary's Server addresses are: Primary DNS 205.242.92.2,
Secondary DNS 205.242.176.103

Click
"OK" and you'll return to the "Remote
Communications" folder, and should see a new icon
for the connection you created: (Your Primary dialer
should be named "Primary Network" here)

Using
the Connection
Now
you're ready to connect to the internet with your HPC!
Connect your modem to a phone line, then go to the "Remote
Communications" folder, and double-tap the icon
for the connection.
A
screen will appear asking for a user ID and password.
(Your Primary username and password are assigned by
you at signup. Remember, the username and password must
be in lower case letters - NO CAPS) Once you're ready,
click the Connect button, and Windows CE will
dial and attempt to connect to your ISP. If PPP handshaking
is supported by your ISP, you'll be automatically connected.
If your ISP requires you manually enter your ID and
password, then a panel will appear showing you the logon
information and allowing you to enter it (you may need
to adjust your connection to "Use terminal window
after dialing" for this).
